Ethnological Museum Barcelona

Barcelona's Ethnology museum houses 10 permanent exhibitions featuring over 10,000 items from the five continents.

The collections serve to show us the history of different peoples, their hardships and challenges along with objects they used in their daily lives.

Origins looks at the creation of the museum and the research work carried out by ethnologists and ethonographers. The other collections on display are Catalonia, Salamanca, Japan, the mountain dwellers of Nuristan, Ethiopia, Australia, Papua New Guinea and pre-hispanic America.

Top Tips for Museums

  • Public museums are free on Sundays from 3pm to 8pm.  Most are also free all day on the first Sunday of each month.
  • Look out for Open days or Portes Obertes that take place on special festival dates throughout the year.
  • Check museum websites before you visit for special kids' activities and workshops.  You may have to register in advance, if not at the ticket office on the day.
  • Find out if a museum offers an annual family pass (Carnet Familiar) which gives you unlimited access throughout the year as this may be the best option if you are planning more than one visit.
  • Barcelona library card holders, take them with you - you will discover a surprising amount of savings can be made at cultural centres around town.
