Child Benefit

As well as maternity and paternity leave rights, parents and guardians of children under the age of 3 in Catalunya are eligible for financial support from the Generalitat of  €638 per year (2009). In addition, working mothers are entitled to an extra tax benefit or  monthly payment from the Spanish Tax Office of approximately €1,200 per year.  Large families or "families nombroses" of 3 children and over, receive €745 for every child under the age of 6 years.  For full details of child benefit payments visit the official Generalitat website section on Family Support in Catalunya.

For the annual child benefit application you should visit your local Social Security office. Tax benefits are applied for at your district office of the Agencia Tributaria. Further information is available at http://www.gencat.cat or by telephone at 012.  As with most child benefit and credits in Spain, the application depends upon the mother. Working mothers need to apply using a form, "modelo 140", at the Agencia Tributaria. Non-working mothers should go to their district Social Security office and complete a "model 141".  Fathers may make the application if the mother is deceased.
