Homeopathy For Children
Homeopathy is the science and art of stimulating self-healing with
natural medicines derived from plants, animals and minerals.
Zoe Holden has been studying and practising classical homeopathy since 1999. She trained in the UK and moved to Barcelona in 2005. She works with babies, children, adults and pregnant women from a centre in Gracia.
Zoe can only provide online advice for first-aid situations. Successful homeopathic treatment of chronic or long-term complaints requires consultation with a skilled homeopath. If you would like to make an appointment to see Zoe, you can also contact her via her website

How to take homeopathic remedies for first aid? Remedies in 30CH potency are usually most suitable for first aid situations and are available from many chemists. You can give remedies up to 3 times a day. Only give when necessary; i.e. do not repeat a dose until the symptoms have stopped improving.
Q. My daughter is 14 months old and has just started to walk. She is
very accident prone and often falls and bangs herself, especially her
head. Is there anything natural that I can give her to help with both
the shock and the bruising? Madeleine
A. An essential component of every mum's handbag is Arnica.
This is the number one homeopathic treatment for bruising and trauma.
Arnica reduces swelling and pain, helps stop bleeding and quickly dries
up tears. You can apply Arnica ointment locally to the injured area and
give the remedy internally in the form of 'bolitas' (pillules) to help
the healing from within. Another helpful treatment for shock is Rescue
Remedy which is a mixture of Bach Flower essences.
Q. My 7 year old daughter gets terribly car sick, she turns pale,
often vomits, and suffers terribly. Is there a homeopathic remedy to
help her symptoms? Marta.
A. Travel sickness, especially in children, can make the thought of
travelling away from home a nightmare. I've listed the top 4
homeopathic remedies for travel sickness and details of the types of
symptoms felt by people who need each specific remedy:
• Cocculus is the number 1 travel sickness remedy. The person feels
faint with dizziness and nausea accompanied by increased saliva and a
metallic taste in the mouth. They feel worse looking at moving objects
and feel better lying down.
• Bryonia is great for people who feel worse for any movement
whatsoever. They want to sit perfectly still and even moving their eyes
will cause them discomfort and make them feel sick.
• Nux Vomica helps people who feel faintness and sickness which is
alleviated by lying down and made worse for the smell of smoke. They
often have an intense headache and an aversion to movement.
•Tabacum works well for people who feel better in the fresh air and
worse in a stuffy room. They can feel dizzy and their nausea and
vomiting is often accompanied by cold sweats and an icy coldness.
Q. Every year, my family and I travel to India to visit my husband's parents. We have a wonderful time but myself and my 2 children, who are 6 and 8 years old, always get a strong dose of 'Delhi Belly'. Is there anything you could suggest to keep us well on the next trip? Jo
A. Good hygiene and food handling practises are key in the prevention of food poisoning. Hand washing before preparing food, before eating, after handling raw foods, after touching animals, refuse or soiled clothes is vital. Food should be washed well in bottled water and avoid fruits that cannot be peeled. However, upset tummies can also be caused by a sudden change in diet. Keep the person hydrated and if symptoms become serious or do not improve in 24 hours, seek medical help. The following remedies are helpful in the treatment of non-serious food poisoning, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Arsenicum Album is especially useful for the treatment of food poisoning and if in doubt, this is the first remedy to try. Stool is liquid, frequently looks like rice water and it burns. The person is anxious, chilly restless and often thirsty for small sips of cold water. Diarrhoea may be accompanied with nausea and/or vomiting. They feel better from warm applications to the abdomen.
Podophyllum helps people who do not show a lot of anxiety (opposite of Arsenicum) they are simply tired and exhausted from having diarrhoea. There is usually no vomiting. The diarrhoea is abundant, watery, noisy, explosive with lots of gas and gurgling in the abdomen. They feel worse: from heat, hot weather and any motion. There is often headache from diarrhoea and faintness.
Veratrum album brings relief to people experiencing severe tiredness along with diarrhoea and vomiting. Diarrhoea is often accompanied by cold sweats, especially on the forehead and occurs simultaneously with profuse, forceful vomiting. They feel weak after stool or after vomiting.
Q. My 3 year old son burned himself picking up a skewer that fell from our barbecue. I ran his hand under cold water for 5 minutes then left the wound to dry and applied calendula cream. His hand was sore for around 4 days but eventually got better. Is there anything I could have used to speed up the healing process? Amanda
A. You did the right thing in applying cold water; that helps to remove the heat from the burn. Afterwards you can apply Urtica ointment to the burn to soothe and heal the wound (Calendula is great for cuts and chapped skin, but Urtica is better for burns). Then you give the homeopathic remedy that corresponds best with the symptoms:
• Urtica Urens for burns with continuous stinging and burning pain with itching and blistering,
• Cantharis for searing pain that feels better for cold compresses.
Both remedies help burns heal rapidly and minimise discomfort and risks of scarring.
