They may be few and far between but there are a number of alternative schools or "Escuelas Libres" in Catalunya that offer parents an education away from the mainstream. Some of these schools and kindergartens have been established for a while but are now undergoing a growth leap in response to increased demand from parents often from the expat community. The most common thing to do in Catalunya and the rest of Spain for that matter is to start your child at school at the age of 3 which is what over 90% of parents do, (98% in Catalunya). The remaining 2% of parents with a growing international community far more comfortable with the idea of sending their child at the age of 5 or 6, are now starting to look for alternatives and mutual support. Many private guarderias are open to children from ages 0-6 years but in reality all the children leave and begin "parvulario" infants school at the age of 3. Even if you chose to continue your child at nursery, classmates of the same age may be short on the ground. Alternative schools usually adopt a particular type of educational philosophy. They may have created their own particular "fusion" but predominantly their methods are not necessarily new and are typically based on child-centred techniques developed at the beginning of the 20th century such as Waldorf, (Steiner), Montessori, In the early 20th century and Italian Dr or what. Maria Montessori developed her philosophy by scientifically watching children's behaviour at school. Although here approach was novel at the time, her name today is equated with most free-thinking schools and now 7,000 schools world-wide (2). One of the most controversial aspects are the mixing of age groups in the belief that younger children learn productively from older children and the setttig is more natural. Another recognizable name in the is Waldorf develope dby Rudolf Steiner at around the same time education in Austria in 1919 and there are currently nearly 900 Waldorf schools across the globe. At the core of Steiner’s vision is that a child is multi-faceted and education should be an art in developing the whole child. Nature, senses.
