Child Benefit and Baby Bonus in SpainAs well as maternity and paternity leave rights, parents and guardians of children under the age of 3 in Catalunya are eligible for financial support from the Generalitat of €638 per year (2009). In addition, working mothers are entitled to an extra tax benefit or monthly payment from the Spanish Tax Office of approximately €1,200 per year. Large families or "families nombroses" of 3 children and over, receive €745 for every child under the age of 6 years.

For the annual child benefit application you should visit your local Social Security office. Tax benefits are applied for at your district office of the Agencia Tributaria. Further information is available at http://www.gencat.cat or by telephone at 012.
Since July 1st 2007, parents of children born in Spain or adopted in Spain have been entitled to a single payment of €2,500. You can apply for this payment from the moment you have registered your baby's birth. You register a birth in Spain at the Registro Civil. Armed with your family book, "Libro de Familia", you can then make the application for your "baby bonus" payment.
As with most child benefit and credits in Spain, the application depends upon the mother. Working mothers need to apply using a form, "modelo 140", at the Agencia Tributaria. Non-working mothers should go to their district Social Security office and complete a "model 141". Fathers may make the application if the mother is deceased.
