Castanyada Festival in Barcelona

The smell of hot chestnuts and cooked sweet potato is a familiar one in the streets of Barcelona at this time of year.

The Catalan traditional holiday of the Castanyada is an Autumn festival at the end of October when a range of traditional foods (Chestnuts, sweet potatoes, glazed fruits and panellet marzipan cakes) are enjoyed.

Halloween, the Day of the Dead and a Castanyada all rolled into one in this day long festival at Poble Espanyol. The event includes a scary caberet show that features clowns, puppets and music, Resurrection a la Carta (at 12.30pm and 4.30pm) as well as a Mexican sweet making workshop (from 11am-4.30pm). From 1.30pm to 2pm, the "castanyes" or chestnuts will be handed out to kids in the main square. See details at el Poble Espanyol
