The Caga Tio is a mixture of Christmas log and Mexican Piñata . It has a smiley face and usually stands on two or four little stick legs.

In Catalan homes the Caga Tio appears around 2 weeks before Christmas and must be fed daily on the likes of oranges, crackers and sweet wine. They are available in different sizes so that they can grow and fatten up as Christmas day approaches.

On Christmas Eve,  whilst the Caga Tio is covered with a blanket, the children of the household beat it with sticks and sing after which the blanket is removed to reveal their hidden presents and sweets for Christmas.
