The highly anticipated, La Mercè, Barcelona's annual festival, gets underway this Thursday. Many of the six days of activities and events can be enjoyed by all the family. Fire runs and Fireworks
No Catalan festival would be complete without a large dose of fiery entertainment.  One of the most exciting events of the Mercè, for kids and adults alike, is the spectacular firework displays that are held over 3 days on the beach at Barceloneta.  The Festival Pirotècnic Internacional is an unbeatable event that shows extraordinary firework displays from 3 different countries. This year's participants include the USA, France and Spain (Valencia).   The Piromusical  at Montjuic, celebrating the last day of La Mercè, is a memorising blend of music and fireworks. If the main Correfoc, held in the city centre on Saturday, is too much for your nerves then you can enjoy a subtler but nonetheless illuminating version at the children's event..see La Mercè 2009 events

Free Entry to Museums
One of the best aspects of the Mercè festival is the open days held at musuems, galleries and cultural centres around town. As well as the wealth of activities laid on for kids at the CosmoCaixa, free entry to the MNAC exhibitions, workshops at Poble Espanyol and the Maritime musuem, families can once again participate in the mass outdoor art workshop that takes place at the MACBA...see La Mercè 2009 events

Circus at the Castle
If you have been meaning to visit Barcelona's Castle overlooking the city on Montjuic, then the Mercè is a good time to do so. As well as free entry to the castle on Thursday, there is daily, outdoor circus entertainment throughout the festival. Castell del Circ is an annual event that attracts many Barcelona families.
